Optimism (OP) is the governance token for the Optimism L2 blockchain, overseen by the Optimism Collective and the newly established Optimism Foundation. This collective experiment in digital democratic governance aims to foster rapid and sustainable growth within a decentralized ecosystem.
OP token holders govern protocol upgrades and network parameters, while also providing incentives for projects and users within the Optimism ecosystem.
Over the next six months, 5.4% of the total token supply will be distributed to projects on Optimism through governance mechanisms, presenting an opportunity for builders within the Ethereum ecosystem to apply for grants and contribute to the platform's development and expansion.
